Coaches Tip – Exercise – Interval Training beneficial for obesity

At the Montreal Hearth Institute’s center for preventative medicine and physical activity researchers took a look at the effectiveness of high intensity interval training coupled with better eating habits on subjects suffering from obesity. Researchers looked at a 9 month program and found that those who involved themselves in interval training and healthy eating practices benefited by a 5.5% body mass reduction, a 5.15% waist circumference loss and a 15% improvement in effort capacity. On top of that subjects also saw a 7% decrease in LDL and a 8% increase in HDL cholesterol levels.
Kinesiologist Valerie Guilbault stated “It is proven that, compared to moderate-intensity continuous training, interval training is more appreciated by participants. This type of training is also more effective, because alternating between short periods of intense effort and rest periods allows for a longer training time”.

Once again interval training is found to be of higher benefit that traditional recommendations of low intensity long duration exercise.
