WHAT is the CrossFit OPEN? This is the first stage of competition for those on their way to the CrossFit Games. But dont let that intimate you – this stage of competition is ALL-INCLUSIVE with workouts designed so almost anyone can do it! Everyone in the world is invited to compete in five workouts over five weeks, posting their scores online in real time. Last year, almost 140,000 athletes competed in the Open – from SYNERGY alone we had over 120 athletes and won the participation award for biggest affiliate in the Western Region!

HOW we do it at SYNERGY? Workouts are released every thursday @ 7pm (5pm PST) starting Feb 27 (for 5 weeks). On FRIDAY and SUNDAY this is the workout that will be programmed into the CrossFit Health & Fitness and SPORT group classes. You can do the workout just once on either of these days, or both of these days in attempt to increase your score. FRIDAYs will run as regular classes, SUNDAY will run on a first come, first serve basis on a heat schedule (more details will be posted each week, also see below for more details). You will need to make sure that you have someone judge your whole workout (another open participant, with a coach on site) and that you enter your score by the deadline each week (Monday @ 7pm following the release of the workout for that week).

How do SUNDAYs work? We will run this similar to last year – there will be heat times set up (schedule will depend on that the workout is) starting at 9am. These times will be set but no one will be scheduled into them – we will rotate people in on a first come first serve basis. Each heat will have 2 waves, so person both gets to do the workout and then will be required to judge the workout for their partner. Example – If workout is a 12 minute AMRAP, and in the workout with our equipment we can have 10 people go at once. We will have heats run every 30 minutes, with a total of 20 people capacity at a time. If 14 people show up at 9am, all 14 can go in that heat, if 22 people show up for 9:30am, 2 of them will have to wait until the 10am heat. Athletes will partner up, we will run through the workout twice during that heat time – each athlete getting a chance to do the workout as well as judge. Schedule for each week will be placed in the EVENTs page for that week (example HERE).

What if I cannot make it to SYNERGY Friday or Sunday that week? If you are not able to make the friday or sunday at SYNERGY to complete your workouts for any particular wee you can do it on another day but you will have to arrange for someone to be available to judge/verify your score for you. Than you will have to submit online like any other week before the monday time deadline. Also sometimes if people are away they will do the workout at another crossfit and get them to judge and verify for them instead, so you could also do that.

Note for athletes planning on going to Regionals (that think they may qualify as a INDIVIDUAL, even if they plan on going TEAM): You will need to use a registered judge who has passed CrossFit’s Judges Course, you will have to have your results validated by an affiliate manager (VP), and have to videotape your performance. EXCERPT FROM GAMES RULEBOOK: At the end of the Open, the top 60 men and top 60 women in each Region will be required to submit a complete video of one of the Open Events. Team competitors are included. If an athlete on a Regional qualifying team finishes in the top 60 in the individual division in their region, he or she will have to submit video of the Open workout requested by CrossFit. (Note: If this Athlete is a member of a Team ranked in the top 35 on the Leaderboard, validation of this video submission will be required for that Team to receive an invitation to Regionals).
