CrossFit Open, Masters Qualifiers, & Regionals

The CrossFit competitive season has been good to SYNERGY, and is still going. Read below for some highlights and what is to come!

The OPEN
Starting Feb 27, 2014 SYNERGY had the highest participation in Canada West with 134 members taking part in the OPEN. The 5 weeks of workouts this year were tough, but we still saw a lot of PRs all the same – members getting their first Double Under, Chest to bar pull-up, banging out multiple deadlift reps at their previous 1RM, getting their first Muscle-Up, and pushing through the most burpees and thrusters they have ever done in any workout before. It is always a real pleasure watching people pass old goals and gain new ones throughout the OPEN, everyone always giving it their all and others cheering as loudly as they can. True to SYNERGY form, our team and ranking kept getting better and better each week, finishing in 13th overall in Western Canada as well as sending 1 individual to Regionals, and 3 individuals qualifying for the next stage of Masters competition. As a side note, had they had the same rules last year we would have qualified 2 Synergy Teams as well as 1 individual.

MASTERS QUALIFIERS
We had 3 individuals (Randy Hills, Dave Marsh and Tania Spak) that ranked in the top 200 in the world in their age category and were on to the next phase of competition for the Masters. Throughout 4 days, these individuals had to compete 4 different workouts, in any order they wanted. Tania Spak was not able to compete, but both Dave & Randy went head to head to crush these workouts. Even without either of them being able to post a score for workout #3, both Dave & Randy moved up in the ranks Dave finishing 113th in the world (up from 148th open finish) and Randy finishing 135th in the world (up from 200th open finish). Congrats to these cats for their amazing feat – looking forward to watching them again next year!

REGIONALS
Led by Coach Chad Benko, we have 1 individual (Eric Peterson) and 1 team (Matt Bathgate, Matt Walz, Carson Sander, Tyler Siwak, Valarie Perry, Ilona Van Der Reijden, Monica Horn, Abra Thompson) heading to Richmond, BC for Regionals on May 7-9. Eric is a veteran to Regionals, competing last year with a 23rd place finish in Canada West. We have a very new team this year, with only 2 previous veterans (Matt Bathgate & Valarie Perry who have both competed on the team or as a individual at Regionals for the last 3 years). We wish them all the best of luck and know the SYNERGY’s strength always shines even more at the Regional level, so know they will do us proud! Good luck and crush it guys.
