What’s one interesting thing about you that other members may not know?

I come off as a bit of a city girl (re: the lipstick, high heels, and unhealthy dependence on Starbucks) but I’m a farm girl at heart.  In fact, Saskatoon is the first city I’ve ever called home – previous home bases prior to living in Saskatoon include Buffalo Narrows – where I managed and worked out at a gym called “Buff and Narrow” and Indian Head.

What is your most memorable moment at Synergy Strength?

There’s too many to count.  But if I had to pick one – the day I snatched 50kg was a pretty big day.  I had a hard time picturing myself actually being able to do that, thinking of where I started;  I remember struggling to get 50lbs over my head – 50kg, no way. I knew that “maxes” were coming and spent the whole week trying to psych myself up.   As the week went on I became more and more comfortable with the idea that it just might be possible – after all, I had worked my butt off for two years. . . Max day came, and I had 50kg on the bar.  I failed the first time, but made it the second.  Equal to my excitement (that I don’t do a very good job of hiding – re: jumping and screaming) was everyone else’s excitement around me – that was really the icing on the cake; high fives, cheering and clapping and hugs.  Great day.

(My second favorite day was when I got to watch Sarah Hills snatch 60kg.  We cried)

When you talk about Synergy Strength with friends, what do you brag about?

I look forward to going to the gym every day.  I have always “worked out” and done my best to stay active, but not since I joined Synergy can I honestly say that I get excited about doing this.  When I walked into Synergy, they asked me why I was there, what I wanted out of a membership – my answer was simple – to get strong.  My excitement stems from actually seeing this happen – everyday I surprise myself a little, and everyday I feel a sense of accomplishment.  The programming is purposeful and well thought out, the coaches are second-to-none and the community is amazing. Going to the gym is one thing, but going to the gym with a smile and then leaving with an even bigger smile is Synergy.

What does #synergystrong mean to you?

Synergy Strong, to me, means finding strength in a place you never thought to look before.  It’s more than just our muscles that make us strong – it’s our attitude, our support systems and our commitment to growth.  Being sure to celebrate the wins, but being humble enough to prepare for the next battle (because there’s always going to be another battle) is a large part of the person we are today and becoming a better version of that person tomorrow.  Each and every aspect of Synergy is committed to helping us become that better version – the programming, the coaches and the athletes.

What is you favorite aspect of Synergy Strength?

The positivity.  The team at Synergy have done such an amazing job of creating an environment that encourages each and every person to celebrate their success – this success doesn’t come as a result of someone else’s weakness or failures, but rather a personal commitment to being stronger.  Additionally – prior to walking in to Synergy, the only time I’d ever touched a barbell was in my grade 12 phys ed bench press lesson (which was underwhelming, to say the least).  The focus on proper, effective weightlifting technique has quickly become one of my favorite parts of the work out, and at the end of the day, made me a better crossfit athlete. It’s hard to put into words exactly how bad-ass (can I say badass?) you feel when your feet slap on the OLY platform after a well-executed jerk.

Best Lifts:

Clean – 70kg

Clean and Jerk – 65 kg

Snatch – 50kg (I’m coming for you, 55!)
