The stories we tell ourselves matter.  In the end, they are all that matters.  They define who you are, how you act and how you will be remembered.  When we are kids, our stories have no limits and change the world.  As we get older, our stories get smaller but still hold truth for us and fit whom we are.

But then something happens…

Our stories no longer fit us.   Either through a series of unfortunate incidents, our lives no longer match our stories.  Or through a crisis, our lives change and no longer match our stories.    At some point you realize…

I’m no longer the hero of my own story.

In fact, I may be the villain.

And then we are adrift; rudderless in our lives and unsure how to get back to our story and become the hero again.  It seems an insurmountable challenge.  Then, someone suggests something incredible…

like for example: have you ever considered doing pushups while doing a handstand?  Or, let’s put a large amount of weight on your back and then have you squat and stand back up.   Or, how about doing a pull up?

So, you try these things.   Initially, you can’t imagine doing them, and then you realize that you can scale them and then you realize that you can actually do them.  Finally, you realize that if you do a little bit each day, that you will soon be able to do the impossible.  At some point you realize…

You can do this with your own life.  You can do that extra little thing that will slowly change your life.   You drink the KoolAid and realize…

You’re not hero of your story anymore.  You’re the Superhero and you can change your world.

On this day, when we did five rounds of Fight Gone Bad, what went through my head was:  “Synergy is easy.  Life is hard.  So let’s get this done.”

What’s one interesting thing about you that other members may not know?

Practically every summer I either go on an Arctic or Antarctic expedition where we climb mountains, experiment on the soils, meet polar bears, muskox, penguins and leopard seals, and spend way too much time in helicopters, planes and boats.

Before I came to the U of S and when we lived in Europe, I worked on the life support systems for the Mars Expedition.

My wife’s tougher than me!

What is your most memorable moment at Synergy Strength?

The day I squated 385# and said to Jason, I haven’t squated this much weight since 1991!

Then I realized, I should ask him how old he was. LOL!

When you talk about Synergy Strength with friends, what do you brag about?

How Synergy is like a time machine. You can recapture that body you had when you were an invincible 20 year old.

What does #synergystrong mean to you?

That’s easy. SynergyStrong is staying up all night with the screaming toddler/baby and still coming in to do a WOD!

What is you favorite aspect of Synergy Strength?

Burpies! Bring them on Chad!
